Study Shows How Social Support May Protect Brain During Stroke
Wed, 19 Nov 2008 00:00:00 PST
New research in mice suggests that high levels of social support may provide some protection against strokes by reducing the amount of damaging inflammation in the brain. Researchers at Ohio State University found that male mice that lived with a female partner before and after a stroke had a much higher survival rate compared to those mice that lived alone. In addition, the paired mice suffered much less brain damage than did the surviving solitary mice.

Vaccine Related Chronic Fatigue Syndrome In An Individual Demonstrating Aluminium Overload
Wed, 19 Nov 2008 00:00:00 PST
A team of scientists have investigated a case of vaccine-associated chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and macrophagic myofasciitis in an individual demonstrating aluminium overload. This is the first report linking aluminium overload with either of the two conditions and the possibility is considered that the coincident aluminium overload contributed significantly to the severity of these conditions in a patient.

New Biomarkers For Brain Tumor Discovered
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 11:00:00 PST
Researchers in the US and The Netherlands have discovered that cancer cells from a deadly type of human brain tumor called glioblastoma release tiny sacs containing proteins that traverse the brain-blood barrier and contain genetic material that could be used as biomarkers in new diagnostic tools and perhaps as new targets for treatments too.

In Vivo Model For Human Brain Cancer (Human Glioblastoma GBM) For Drug Discovery Applications Introduced By Celprogen
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 09:00:00 PST
Celprogen Inc., a Global leader in the Stem Cell Research and Therapeutics industry for development of stem cell technologies in regenerative medicine, today announced that they have successfully validated an in vivo model system for testing efficacy of cancer drugs and also novel drug candidates for Human Glioblastoma. This in vivo model system has been validated within United States research facilities for testing novel drug candidates against Human Glioblastoma.

New Molecular Insight Into Vertebrate Brain Development
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 09:00:00 PST
In the December 1st issue of G&D, Dr. Fred H. Gage (The Salk Institute for Biological Studies) and colleagues reveal a role for the Hippo signaling pathway in the regulation of vertebrate neural development, identifying new factors - and potential therapeutic targets - that may be involved in congenital brain size disorders and neurological tumor formation. Their paper will be made available online ahead of print on 11/17 at

Cyclosporin Human Neuroprotection Validated By Maas Biolab Scientists
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 09:00:00 PST
Maas Biolab researchers CSO Eskil Elmér, M.D., Ph.D. and neuroscientist Magnus Hansson, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues have for the first time ever demonstrated the mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT) or "megapore" occurs in viable adult human neuron mitochondria and the ability of cyclosporin-A to block its formation. These effects had previously been well characterized in animal neuroprotection studies and have now been validated in human brain tissue.
